so i learned about the phrase ni modo in a new book i'm reading. Basically it's a less crude way of saying fuck my life... but not really. it's close. It means that something has happened ( whether it be bad or good, usually bad) and it's out of your control, so "ni modo" -- oh well. I have also read that this is a common phrase used in mexico, and that most people can be considered in "the land of ni modo" because of the unfortunate events that take place all the time. :(
